Shem Creek – Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

If you love sea food, Shem Creek is the place to be! Commercial fishing started here in 1890 and has been big business ever since. I had the fish stew and a house salad with warm bacon dressing at the Water’s Edge restaurant on the creek for dinner tonight. The fish stew is one of my favorites here, and Shem Creek is one of my favorite places in the United States. After dinner I got out with my camera at that magical hour to see the sunset. Right now as I look outside the sun has set and the sky is a dusky blue, but the horizon is still orangy pink. Very beautiful.

There are several restaurants to choose from and one could just watch the comings and goings on the creek all day. The featured image shows kayakers and stand up paddle boarders (this is harder than it looks!), but you will also see boats of many types, and sometimes dolphins.

Shem Creek is also the setting for Dorthea Benton Frank’s book “Shem Creek, A Low Country Tale.” – one of my favorites.

Taken with my phone (small size), these dogs were cruisin’ the creek with their owner.
