The link above is a news item from CNN about two shark attacks this past Sunday in waist-deep water off the beach in Oak Island, North Carolina

I own a house there, and have walked this beach many times – swam in the exact same waters. You hear of shark attacks every now and then, but they are always “somewhere else.” Even though I don’t live there, I visit often, and this seems a bit too close to home.

One of the attacks happened right next to the fishing pier, so as I think about it, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often, what with bait fish being dangled into the water. When you’re swimming at an ocean beach, be aware of where people are fishing.

Needless to say I probably won’t be swimming there when I go in September!
