Favorite Islands – Key West, FL

Key West, the southernmost point in the US, is famous for Jimmy Buffet, Earnest Hemingway, and Duval Street – a lively string of shops, bars, and restaurants. Sloppy Joe’s restaurant was Hemingway’s haunt.

There are many ways to see Key West – on the Conch Train Tour, on a bike or scooter –but the best way is on foot. Stroll down Duval Street and then check out the back streets and out of the way places. I always find the best restaurants off the beaten path.

Any number of things will keep you busy by day – shopping, touring, boating, golfing and much more, but before sunset you will want to make your way to Mallory Square for the sunset celebration – food, art and craft exhibitors, and street performers all gather for this nightly event.

If you’re going to be in Key West at least a couple of days, you might want to take the Yankee Freedom Catamaran to the Dry Tortugas National Park (70 miles west) to explore Fort Jefferson, hang at the beach, or snorkel in the crystal blue waters.

How to get there? Fly into Key West from Miami, drive down through the Florida Keys, or if you happen to be in the Fort Myers area, you can take the Key West Express down for the day, or as long as you want to stay.
