Starting in January 2016 residents of MN, LA, NH, NY, and American Samoa may need more than a regular driver’s license to board domestic flights.

The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 requires state driver’s licenses to be equipped with machine-readable technology in the form of a chip. The above mentioned states have not complied with this new regulation. They have resisted due to the high administrative costs and a 50% increase in license fees for drivers. However, MN and NY have made an enhanced license available to drivers at a cost up to $30.00 more than a basic license.

If you have a trip planned for 2016 or after or even if you’re just thinking about one, it would be wise to get the enhanced driver’s license, or better yet, just get a passport, if you don’t already have one. They will run you a bit of money (over $100.00) and it will take some time to receive it after applying, but they are good for ten years. $10.00 a year is not a lot to ensure you will get on that flight for your much deserved vacation. And, if you decide to go somewhere out of the country you will be all set. The REAL ID Act may affect boarding cruise ships also.

One last reminder – your passport must not expire for at least six months AFTER you return from your trip.
